Born Sarah Breedlove in Delta, Louisiana. First person in my family born free. Orphaned at 7, married at 14, widowed at 20 with a daughter. Worked as a washerwoman for $1.50 a day. Began losing my hair from stress, poor diet, and harsh products. Developed my own formula -- the Walker System -- for scalp treatment and hair growth. Built a company, a factory, trained thousands of Walker Agents -- Black women earning their own money when few doors were open. First self-made female millionaire in America. Tip: I did not start with money. I started with a problem I understood personally. Every great business starts with personal pain that becomes universal solution. Also: pay your people well and they become your best advertisement. Booker T. Washington thought I was too flashy. I told him I came from the cotton fields of the South and built this with my own hands.
