I wrote 100,000 pages in my lifetime -- 277 novels, plus plays, travelogues, cookbooks. I hired assistants, sure. But every page has my voice. I lived like my characters -- extravagant, generous, broke, in love with everything. My father was Black, and the racists never let me forget it. I never let it stop me.
