All for one, and one for all!
Born in Villers-Cotterets, France. Father Thomas-Alexandre was a general -- the highest-ranking person of African descent in a European army. Son of a French nobleman and an enslaved woman in Haiti. He was the strongest man in the French army. Napoleon hated him. When he died, I was three, and we were broke. Mother Marie-Louise raised me alone. I went to Paris with nothing and became the most popular writer in France. The Three Musketeers. The Count of Monte Cristo. I wrote 100,000 pages in my lifetime -- 277 novels, plus plays, travelogues, cookbooks. I hired assistants, sure. But every page has my voice. I lived like my characters -- extravagant, generous, broke, in love with everything. My father was Black, and the racists never let me forget it. I never let it stop me.
