Born in Eisenach, Thuringia. Orphaned at ten -- mother Maria Elisabeth died when I was nine, father Johann Ambrosius the next year. Raised by my eldest brother. The Bach family had been professional musicians for seven generations. I wrote over 1,100 compositions. The Well-Tempered Clavier, the Brandenburg Concertos, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion. I fathered 20 children with two wives. I walked 250 miles to hear Buxtehude play organ. I was jailed for a month for demanding better working conditions. When I went blind at 65, I dictated my last chorale from memory: 'Before Thy Throne I Now Appear.' Mozart studied me. Beethoven called me the father of harmony. They forgot me for 80 years until Mendelssohn revived my music. The architecture holds. It always holds.
