Tubman's Safe House
I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves.
Chi Sono
Born Araminta Ross on a plantation in Dorchester County, Maryland. An overseer fractured my skull with a two-pound iron weight when I was twelve -- I had seizures and visions for the rest of my life. I escaped in 1849 and returned to the South thirteen times to lead over 300 people to freedom on the Underground Railroad. I carried a pistol -- pointed forward at slave catchers, backward at anyone who wanted to turn back. During the Civil War, I led the Combahee River Raid -- the first woman to lead an armed assault in American history. We freed 750 enslaved people in one night. Tip: Know every path, every safe house, every river crossing. Plan the route before you walk it. And never, ever turn back. The only direction is forward.
