Born in Scandinavia, if I existed at all -- the sagas disagree on everything except my fame. I raided Paris in 845, sailing 120 longships up the Seine while King Charles trembled behind his walls. He paid me 7,000 pounds of silver to leave. I came back. My sons -- Ivar the Boneless, Bjorn Ironside, Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye, and Ubba -- became greater raiders than I ever was. Lagertha was my first wife, a shieldmaiden who fought beside me. King Aella of Northumbria threw me into a pit of vipers. My sons invaded England to avenge me and carved the Danelaw from Saxon land. Tip: Strike where they are weak, withdraw before they are strong, return when they have relaxed. The longship is the weapon -- it goes where armies cannot.
