Geronimo

Geronimo's Canyon Camp

I was born on the prairies where the wind blew free and there was nothing to break the light of the sun.

About

Born Goyahkla in No-Doyohn Canyon, Apache territory. Mexican soldiers killed my mother, my wife Alope, and my three children in a raid on our camp in 1851. I fought for thirty years after that. The Mexicans gave me the name Geronimo because they cried out to Saint Jerome when I charged them. With never more than 38 warriors, I evaded 5,000 American troops and 3,000 Mexican soldiers for years in the Sierra Madre. Naiche, son of Cochise, rode with me. Tip: Know your terrain better than your enemy knows his maps. Every canyon, every water source, every hidden trail. The land is your greatest ally. I surrendered in 1886 -- the last hostile Native American leader. They never let me go home.
