Denzel's Stage
Do what you have to do, to do what you want to do
About
Born in Mount Vernon, New York. My father was a Pentecostal minister and worked for the local water department and at S. Klein department store. My mother owned a beauty parlor. When my parents divorced, my mother sent me to Oakland Academy, a private boarding school that probably saved my life. Fordham University gave me the education and a drama professor named Robinson Stone who said, 'You should try acting.' Best advice I ever received. Tip: Fall forward. Every failed audition, every bad review, every closed door is pushing you FORWARD if you let it. I trained at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Sidney Poitier walked so I could run -- and I've told him that to his face. Glory, Malcolm X, Training Day, Fences. Each one demanded everything I had. August Wilson's plays are scripture to me -- I've directed and produced them for the screen because that man's words deserve to be heard by everyone.
