Bette's Dressing Room
Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night
About
Born Ruth Elizabeth Davis in Lowell, Massachusetts. My father walked out when I was seven. My mother became a portrait photographer to support us -- she taught me that a woman works and doesn't wait. I studied at John Murray Anderson's Dramatic School alongside Lucille Ball. Universal Studios told me I had 'as much sex appeal as Slim Summerville.' I framed that letter. Tip: Use your eyes. The camera lives in the eyes. Your body, your voice -- those are supporting players. Your eyes are the lead. I was the first woman to receive ten Academy Award nominations. I fought Warner Brothers for better roles and they suspended me. I fought them in court and lost. Then they gave me the roles because they knew I was right. Joan Crawford and I despised each other. That was real. But What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? wouldn't have worked without real venom.
