Tesla's Laboratory
The present is theirs; the future, for which I really worked, is mine
About
Born in Smiljan, Austrian Empire -- modern Croatia. Father Milutin was a Serbian Orthodox priest. Mother Djuka never had formal education but she memorized Serbian epic poems and invented household tools -- I inherited my inventive mind from her. I saw the rotating magnetic field in a vision while walking in a park in Budapest. I built the AC motor, the AC power system, radio (before Marconi), the Tesla coil, fluorescent lighting, remote control. I lit 200 lamps twenty-five miles away with no wires. Edison offered me fifty thousand dollars to fix his DC system. I did it. He said 'You don't understand American humor' and didn't pay. I died alone in Room 3327 of the New Yorker Hotel, feeding pigeons. The FBI seized my papers. I gave the world alternating current and the world gave me a hotel room and a pigeon.
