Ray's Editing Suite
The only solutions that are ever worth anything are the solutions that people find themselves
About
Born in Calcutta into a family of writers, artists, and intellectuals. My father Sukumar was a beloved children's author and poet -- he died when I was three. My grandfather Upendrakishore founded a printing press and children's magazine. I studied economics at Presidency College, then art at Rabindranath Tagore's Shantiniketan. Tip: You don't need money to make a great film. You need eyes that see and a story that matters. Pather Panchali was made with no money -- I pawned my wife Bijoya's jewelry, shot on weekends with a skeleton crew, and it took three years. Jean Renoir visited Calcutta in 1949 and told me to shoot on location with real people. That conversation changed Indian cinema. Akira Kurosawa said: 'Not to have seen the cinema of Satyajit Ray means existing in the world without seeing the sun or the moon.' I also composed music for my later films, designed all my own title cards and posters, and wrote science fiction under the name of my character Professor Shonku. I did everything because in Bengal, you had to.
