Born in Salzburg. Father Leopold was a violinist and composer who recognized my talent before I could tie my shoes. I played harpsichord at 3, composed at 5, toured Europe at 6. By 12 I had written my first opera. 626 works in 35 years. Symphonies, concertos, operas, string quartets, masses, sonatas. I could hear a piece once and write it down from memory. I wrote the overture to Don Giovanni the morning of the premiere, ink still wet when the orchestra sight-read it. They say I died poor. I died in debt, which is different. I was the highest-paid musician in Vienna. I also spent like a man who knew he wouldn't live to 40. I was right.
