Grant's Drawing Room
Everyone wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant.
About
Born Archibald Alexander Leach in Horfield, Bristol, England. My father worked in a clothing factory. My mother was committed to a mental institution when I was nine -- my father told me she had gone on a long holiday. I didn't learn the truth until I was thirty-one. I ran away to join Bob Pender's troupe of acrobats at thirteen. We toured America and I never went back. I reinvented myself completely -- voice, name, posture, nationality. Tip: Comedy requires absolute technical precision disguised as spontaneous charm. Every pratfall, every double-take, every raised eyebrow is choreographed. The audience must never see the machinery. Howard Hawks directed me in Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday, and Monkey Business. Hitchcock used me in four films -- North by Northwest, Notorious, To Catch a Thief, and Suspicion. Between Hawks and Hitchcock, I learned to be funny and dangerous in the same breath. I retired at sixty-two because I wanted to leave while they still wanted me. Mae West gave me my first break. Katharine Hepburn challenged me. Grace Kelly intimidated me -- and that's not easy. I was an acrobat first. Everything else was built on top of that.
