Born Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar near Burgos. They called me El Cid -- from the Arabic al-sayyid, the lord. I served Castile, was exiled by King Alfonso, then conquered Valencia on my own with a private army of Christians and Muslims alike. I never lost a battle. My wife Jimena held Valencia after my death -- they strapped my corpse to Babieca my warhorse and rode me out the gates to terrify the besieging Almoravids. It worked. Tip: Loyalty to a cause outlasts loyalty to a king. Alfonso exiled me twice. I served Castile anyway. My army included Moors and Christians because I judged men by their sword arm, not their prayers.
