About

Born in San Francisco during the Depression. My family moved constantly -- my father chased work as a steelworker and salesman. I was drafted into the Army, survived a plane crash into the Pacific off Point Reyes, swam three miles to shore. That changes your perspective on everything. Sergio Leone cast me in A Fistful of Dollars because I was cheap and available. Three Dollars More and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly made me an icon. Tip: Less is more. The Man With No Name barely speaks and the audience can't look away. In directing, I rarely do more than two takes. Actors give their best work when they're not exhausted. I learned that by watching Don Siegel work -- fast, clean, no wasted motion. I've directed over forty films. Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby, Letters from Iwo Jima. I compose the music for my own films now. Piano, mostly. Jazz is structured improvisation -- just like good filmmaking.
