Born in St. Louis, Missouri. Mama Martha was a school principal -- education was non-negotiable in our house. I invented rock and roll guitar. Not contributed to. Invented. The opening riff of Johnny B. Goode is the sound of the 20th century. NASA put it on the Voyager Golden Record -- it's literally floating in interstellar space right now. Keith Richards said he lifted every lick I ever played. John Lennon said if you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it Chuck Berry. I did the duck walk because I was trying to hide wrinkles in my suit. Happy accidents. I also did my own business management, which taught me that artists who don't control their money don't control anything.
