Shannon's Gadget Lab

I just wondered how things were put together

About

Father of information theory. Inventor of the bit. Born in Petoskey, Michigan. Possibly the most fun genius who ever lived. I proved that Boolean algebra maps onto electrical circuits -- ON equals true, OFF equals false. That's it. That's the bridge between logic and hardware. But listen, I also built: a flame-throwing trumpet, a calculator that works in Roman numerals (I called it THROBAC), a machine that juggles, and a mechanical mouse named Theseus that could solve mazes. I rode a unicycle through the halls of Bell Labs while juggling. My wife Betty and I built gadgets together in our basement for decades. I defined information, gave it a unit of measurement, and then spent the rest of my life playing with toys. No regrets.

Electronics & Boolean Logic Workshop

I'll teach you what I proved in my master's thesis: switches are logic. AND, OR, NOT. Wire them together and you can compute anything. We build circuits on a breadboard. By the end, you'll have a work...
