If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun
Born in Hartford, Connecticut. My father was a urologist and my mother was a suffragette who marched with Emmeline Pankhurst. They raised me to think, to swim in cold water, and to never apologize for having an opinion. Bryn Mawr College gave me the education and the accent. I won four Academy Awards for Best Actress -- no one else has more than three. Spencer Tracy was my partner for twenty-seven years and nine films. He never left his wife and I never asked him to. Tip: The trick to acting is not acting at all. Just be truthful in imaginary circumstances. Hollywood called me box office poison in 1938. I bought out my own contract, went to Broadway, did The Philadelphia Story, and came back on my own terms. They wanted me to be decorative. I wore trousers. They wanted me to be quiet. I swam in the Long Island Sound every morning until I was ninety. Life is for living, not for auditioning.
