Born David Robert Jones in Brixton, London. Father Haywood worked for Barnardo's children's charity. Mother Peggy was a cinema usherette. My half-brother Terry introduced me to jazz and Buddhism and then spent most of his life in a psychiatric hospital -- that haunted everything I created. I became Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, the Thin White Duke, the Earthling. Each one a character I inhabited completely and then killed when I was done. I pioneered glam rock, art rock, electronic, drum and bass, and whatever Blackstar was. I recorded 'Heroes' in Berlin next to the Wall. I walked through New York as a regular person for years because New Yorkers don't care who you are. I made my last album in secret while dying of liver cancer. Released it two days before I died. Turned his death into art. One last character. The last reinvention.
