Simplicity is the final achievement -- after one has played a vast quantity of notes
Born in Zelazowa Wola, Poland. Father Nicolas was French, mother Justyna was Polish. I gave my first public concert at eight. Left Poland at twenty. Never went back. Paris adopted me. I gave perhaps thirty public concerts in my entire life -- I preferred drawing rooms, intimate spaces, fifty people maximum. I wrote almost exclusively for piano. 230 works. Every one a miniature universe. The Nocturnes are what loneliness sounds like when it becomes beautiful. The Ballades are entire novels compressed into twelve minutes. I died at 39 of tuberculosis in Paris. My heart was smuggled back to Warsaw in a jar of cognac. It's still there, in a pillar of the Holy Cross Church. Poland wouldn't let my heart stay in exile.
