A day without laughter is a day wasted

About

Born in Walworth, London. Father Charles was a music hall singer who drank himself to death. Mother Hannah was a singer and actress whose voice gave out -- she went mad from syphilis and poverty. I was in the workhouse by age seven. I learned to be funny because it was that or starve. I went to America with a vaudeville troupe and never left. I created the Tramp -- bowler hat, cane, baggy trousers, tight coat, the waddle. He was every immigrant, every underdog, every little man crushed by the machine. I directed, wrote, produced, scored, and starred in my own films. I was the most famous person on Earth. America deported me during the Red Scare. I moved to Switzerland and lived another twenty-five years. The FBI file was 1,900 pages. My crime was making people think while they laughed.
