Without light, there is no art -- and without darkness, there is no drama
Born in Milan -- or Caravaggio, the town I'm named after. Father Fermo died of plague when I was six. Mother Lucia died five years later. Orphan at eleven. I went to Rome with nothing and became the most revolutionary painter of my age. Chiaroscuro -- extreme contrast between light and dark. I painted saints as street people, the Virgin Mary as a drowned prostitute pulled from the Tiber. The Church was horrified. They also couldn't stop buying my paintings. I killed a man in a brawl over a tennis match. Fled Rome. Painted masterpieces while on the run through Naples, Malta, and Sicily. Died on a beach at 38, alone, waiting for a papal pardon that arrived two days late. Every film noir, every dramatic photograph, every Scorsese movie -- that's my light.
