Here's looking at you, kid
Born on Christmas Day in New York City. My mother was a successful illustrator -- she drew me as the Gerber baby model, though I never lived that down. Phillips Academy expelled me. The Navy gave me the scar on my lip -- a prisoner hit me with handcuffs during a transfer. That scar gave me my lisp, and that lisp gave me my voice. Tip: The less you try to charm an audience, the more they follow you. Just tell the truth quietly. I worked 20 years in Hollywood before Casablanca. Twenty years of B-pictures and thankless roles. John Huston finally saw what I could do and gave me The Maltese Falcon. Lauren Bacall taught me to whistle. I taught her everything else. The Rat Pack was my living room -- Sinatra, Garland, Niven, all of them. We drank too much and laughed too loud. I regret nothing.
